The T.V. presenter said

“and after the break we are going to speak to a weight loss specialist about how to lose weight for good”.

Sally’s* eyes lit up and she sat upright on the lounge. ‘Great, this is just what I’m after, how to lose weight forever and keep it off’.

Sally was tired of the yo-yo dieting with her going on a diet for a week, losing weight but then putting it all back on and more when she went off the diet. The diets were so hard to stay on…. So this was exactly what she was after….

After eagerly waiting during the advert, the presenter came back on and started the interview. They chatted for a while and then the weight loss specialist dropped the bombshell. She said

‘the only real way to lose weight and keep it off is to go on a sensible nutritional eating plan that you can stick with for the rest of your life’.

‘Oh boy’ said Sally, ‘for the rest of my life I'd have to eat healthy!’ Sally was soooo disappointed. Was that it…. ‘I would have to eat salads and vegetables for the rest of my life’! All Sally wanted was a quick fix to lose the weight fast and then go back to what she liked to eat. She didn’t want to never eat her favourite foods of chocolate, chips and doughnuts. This would be a form of torture.

Over the following years Sally still did the yo-yo dieting and then decided ‘it’s not working’. She made a decision to book herself into something like Weight Watchers and it did work. She lost the weight at about ½ - 1 kg a week and after six months she was at her ideal weight. She now knew how to lose weight. However, over the years when things weren't going so well for her, she put on a few too many kilos or if super stressed it could sometimes be a stone. But she knew how to lose it! But the yo-yo continued.

Then Sally went to counselling for another reason; and while there her eating issues came up and she realised how this area of her life was very much related to her thinking and emotional aspect of her life. So by default, Sally now understood that that interview she had heard many years ago was partly right, it is good to adopt an eating plan that works for you but there is the other side of the coin that is the emotional side to eating.

So, if you can relate to Sally through any part of this story then heading for some emotional support prior or during any issue related to food can be a good idea.

(*Sally is not her real name; however, this is a true story of a client who has provided permission to relate this story).
